Pineville, LA – With rising temperatures, the Pineville Police Department urges all community members to take the necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses, especially during periods of excessive heat.
Health Risks of High Temperatures High temperatures can pose severe health risks such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Outdoor workers and those participating in outdoor activities are also at increased risk.
Precautionary Measures The Pineville Police Department recommends the following safety tips to help protect yourself and others from the dangers of the heat:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
- Limit Outdoor Activities: Try to schedule outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening.
- Wear Appropriate Clothing: Lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing can help keep you cool.
- Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, and reapply as directed.
- Never Leave People or Pets in Cars: Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise to dangerous levels within minutes, leading to fatal consequences.
- Check on Others: Regularly check on family, friends, and neighbors who may be at higher risk of heat illness, especially if they do not have air conditioning.
Symptoms of Heat-Related Illnesses Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, cold, pale, and clammy skin, a fast or weak pulse, nausea or vomiting, and fainting. Heat stroke symptoms include high body temperature (above 103°F), hot, red, dry, or moist skin, rapid and strong pulse, and possible unconsciousness. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
